English Language Development

Our multilingual learning (MLL) team at Farnsworth Aerospace Upper Campus serves approximately 180 students in grades 5 through 8. We have four full-time English language (EL) teachers, one for each grade level, and three bilingual EAs. Most of our multilingual learners are at WIDA level 3 or 4.

Multilingual learners at all grade levels receive services through a variety of co-taught classes. In those classes, an EL teacher works side-by-side with a language arts or math teacher to deliver course content while building students' skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Additionally, 6th through 8th grade students can receive direct instruction from their EL teacher in English Language Development, which dedicates one class period every day for multilingual learners to build their language skills. 5th grade multilingual learners regularly work with their EL teacher in small groups as well.

In addition to our four EL teachers, our three bilingual EAs provide direct support to multilingual learners in a variety of classes across all grade levels and content areas. They also spend time every day on the vital work of communicating with our Farnsworth families. Together, our EL team collaborates with students, families, and educators to ensure that all students have the skills and support that they need to be successful.
